Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home scaled fresh heights this session as it reached an amazing new milestone by crossing the $1B mark at the international box office. The offshore cume through Sunday is an estimated $1.003B for a global total of $1.74B.
With the new milestone, No Way Home becomes only the 10th movie ever to the $1B international box office mark — and most impressively, the film got there without any input from China where a release date has not been given. Globally, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker fronts the No. 6 film of all time.
The current weekend added $21.1M from 14,400+ screens in 63 markets. The holdover drop was just 26%, while individual markets did better than the average including Saudi Arabia (+16%), Germany (-16%), Spain (-19%), Italy (-20%), Belgium (-22%), Australia (-23%).
The Jon Watts-directed phenom has also become the
UK‘s top-grossing superhero title ever with a market cume of $120.1M, and is the No. 6 movie there of all time. The UK continues to lead all offshore play, followed by Mexico with $74.4M, Korea at $61.5M, France at $61.2M, Australia with $55.2M, Brazil at $53.8M, Russia with $46M, Germany‘s $45.1M, India‘s $36.2M and Japan‘s $29.7M.
Overall, Spider-Man: No Way Home is the highest-grossing superhero movie of all time in 19 territories: Argentina, Belgium, Croatia, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Lithuania, Mexico, Mongolia, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Syria, Turkey, Ukraine, and the UK.
Universal
Coming in second for the studios internationally this session, Universal/Illumination’s Sing 2 had a terrific hold, dropping just 23%. The charmer added $17.4M in a total 62 markets which includes the No. 1 UK start of $9.3M. That’s the market’s best animation debut of virus times and the third-biggest overall since 1917 launched in January 2020. The Saturday haul was bigger than the combined revenue of the other Top 10 titles by over 20%. That same day gave Sing 2 the best Saturday for an animated title since Frozen II in November 2019.
Sing 2 last weekend became the highest-grossing animated film of the pandemic era and now has an international cume of $133.4M for $268M global.
France continues to lead Sing 2 play, dropping just 8% in its sixth frame to gross $18M. Impressive holds were also seen in Australia (-21%/$12.6M cume after six weekends), Mexico (-25%/$12.3M cume after six) and Germany (-4%/$5.1M cume from the sophomore session). Japan is still on deck in March.
